Andreas Horn is Head of AIOps at IBM. He is a top influencer at LinkedIn for AI and is posting regularly about the latest topics and news in the area of AI. I went through his posts and used a little bit AI on my own to wrap up some of the most interesting insights from all the dense information he is regularly sharing.
The way people think about computers and AI has shifted from doubt about responsibility in 1979 to increasing dependence on their decision-making in 2024. This shift is evident in the transition from the IBM training course message "computers don't account for themselves"to today's "AI first" strategies, where algorithms drive financial systems, optimize supply chains, and power decision-making tools across various industries. What was once a warning about computer accountability has become our reality of complete dependence on their decision-making capabilities.
AI agents are autonomous systems that can manage complex tasks and make decisions without constant human input, unlike simple chatbots. Unlike simple chatbots that provide pre-programmed responses, AI agents possess autonomy, enabling them to handle complex tasks, make decisions, and manage workflows independently. They operate in a continuous loop of thinking, planning, acting through tools, and reflecting, which makes them adaptive and capable of learning. This allows them to go beyond mere information retrieval and execute tasks on behalf of users.
For reasoning models, it is crucial to provide as much context as possible and clearly define the desired output, rather than detailing how to achieve it. When prompting the latest reasoning models, such as O3-mini and O1, it's essential to provide the FULL picture with as much context as possible, often exceeding what you might think is necessary. Instead of telling the model "think step by step," you should be crystal clear about the desired output, specifying what you need, not how to get there, and forget about few-shot prompting by stating your request directly. These models function more like "report generators" than chat models.
The increasing autonomy of AI agents brings potential risks such as a lack of transparency and reduced human oversight. As AI agents are autonomous doers that can learn, reason, take action, and make decisions, their risks are amplified compared to LLMs. Potential risks include a lack of transparency in their decision-making processes, reduced human oversight due to their increased autonomy, and the possibility of goal misalignment where agents drift from human intent or values. It is also crucial to consider the potential for compounding errors and ethical blind spots.
Successful AI adoption in companies increasingly requires a top-down strategy with leadership involvement. McKinsey's report on the State of AI in 2025 highlights that AI success starts at the top, and a top-down process is crucial to really move the needle. Companies that delegate AI solely to IT or digital teams often face failure. Strong leadership support and a clear vision from the top are essential for AI initiatives to scale and deliver tangible value.
Building safety layers (guardrails) into AI agents is essential to ensure they operate within desired parameters. Given that AI agents can act autonomously, it is essential to build safety layers, or guardrails, into them to ensure they operate within desired parameters and prevent risky or undesirable behaviors, especially when handling sensitive data or high-stakes tasks. This is crucial because unlike LLMs that only generate, AI agents act. Setting guardrails, not just prompts, is a key mitigation strategy for the risks associated with AI agents.
Small Language Models (SLMs) offer a privacy-first design, efficiency, affordability, and specialized mastery in niche domains. In contrast to Large Language Models (LLMs), Small Language Models (SLMs) are designed to be lean, fast, and precise, offering a privacy-first design by keeping data local and eliminating cloud-based processing. They also provide efficiency and affordability by requiring less computational power and energy, and they can achieve specialized mastery in niche domains like healthcare and law, often outperforming larger general-purpose models. The adoption of SLMs is gaining traction due to these advantages.
Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT utilize attention mechanisms to analyze entire sequences at once, enabling them to understand complex word relationships. The underlying architecture of Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT often includes transformer architectures , which are known for their attention mechanisms. These mechanisms allow the model to weigh the importance of different parts of the input sequence when generating the output, enabling them to understand complex relationships between words, regardless of their distance in the sequence. This is a key advancement over earlier architectures like RNNs that processed sequences sequentially.
LLMs can reflect and scale human cognitive biases because they are trained on human data. LLMs are trained on vast amounts of human data, and consequently, they can learn and scale the cognitive biases present in that data. These cognitive biases are the invisible patterns driving human decisions, shaping what we notice, remember, and trust. Understanding these human biases, such as confirmation bias and stereotyping, is crucial to understanding and mitigating bias in AI systems.
Artificial Intelligence is not a single technology but rather a hierarchy of methods and approaches, with each layer enabling more advanced capabilities. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a broad category encompassing automation, reasoning, and decision-making, and it is not just one thing like ChatGPT. It is a hierarchy of methods and approaches, starting from rule-based systems, evolving through Machine Learning (ML) and Neural Networks (NNs), to Deep Learning (DL), Transformers, Generative AI (GenAI), and Large Language Models (LLMs). Each layer in this hierarchy builds upon the previous one, enabling increasingly advanced capabilities in AI systems.
